"Hear this, you kings! Listen, you rulers!
I will sing to the LORD, I will sing;
I will make music to the LORD, the God of Israel." Judges 5:3
Music is an important part of life at Christ The King. Our six musical ensembles, described below, are always looking for new members. In addition, there are many opportunities for singers and instrumentalists to perform solos throughout the year. Please contact our Director of Music, Abby Schoppe, at abigail.schoppe@gmail.com or (617) 676-8055 for further information.
Adult Choir
Christ The King’s adult choir practices on Thursday evenings, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM, leads the music at the 11:00 service on a weekly basis from September through May, and performs anthems in a variety of musical styles. All singers ages 14 and up are welcome to join!
Children’s Choir
The children’s choir is open to those in grades 2-8. This group rehearses from 5:45-6:30 PM on Tuesdays during the academic year and leads the music at approximately seven services per year (including festivals such as Christmas Eve and Easter).
Handbell Choir
Directed by Kathy Murcko, our three-octave handbell choir rehearses on Monday evenings, from 7:15 to 8:30 PM, and performs at approximately six services per year. Handbells not only produce a beautiful tone but are also an easy way to become involved in making music in an ensemble setting; if you can count to four, you can learn to play handbells!
Children’s Chimes
Our three-octave set of hand chimes is played by students in grades 1-3. We rehearse on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:00 PM during the school year and perform at approximately five services per year. No prior musical experience is necessary; children in this group will be taught basic musical literacy as part of their rehearsals.
Junior Bell Choir
Students in grades 4-8 play two octaves of hand bells, rehearsing from 7 to 7:45 on Tuesday evenings during the academic year and performing at approximately five services per year. Members of this group will typically have previous experience playing hand chimes or another musical instrument. The Junior Bell Choir is designed to provide middle school students with the necessary preparation to join the adult bell choir upon their arrival in high school.
Praise Band
Led by Jim Bruce, the ‘Good News Praise Band’ leads the music at the 9:45 service each week from September through June. This is the only ensemble at Christ The King that requires members to audition, but Jim and/or Pastor Janisko are always eager to listen to singers and instrumentalists who might be interested in becoming a part of this group. Praise Band rehearsals are Wednesday from 7:30-9:00 PM.
